Repiping

When your home's piping begins to age the degradation process can take its toll on your plumbing system. There are some signs your plumbing system is in need of repiping.

1. Your pipes are made of unsafe material. Some older plumbing systems are made from lead pipes. This is absolutely unsafe and should be replaced immediately. Polybutylene pipes are also known to leak easily and should be checked for replacement. Homes made in the 70's and earlier might have pipes made from galvanized steel and will erode much sooner than newer materials and should also be checked for replacement.

2. Your pipes are creating a lot of noise. If your home's plumbing system pipes are creating an inordinate amount of noise it is very likely that water isn't the only thing flowing through them and should be checked and replaced as soon as possible.

3. Your pipes are leaking. This likely goes without saying, but leaking pipes need immediate attention. Some symptoms of a leaking pipe are discoloration, stains, flaking, or rust - it is likely your pipes have begun the natural erosion process. Unfortunately simply repairing corroded pipes isn't recommended and replacement is the best course of action.

4. Low water pressure. Low water pressure can be caused by quite a few things. Typically we find that corrosion and buildup are the main culprits. This tends to block the flow of water through the pipe and leads to a drop in pressure within the home.

5. Discolored water. If the water flowing from your spout is tinted yellow, red or brown tint that means your pipes have likely begun to rust or have some sort of sediment within them and need replacement. This is easiest to diagnose when the pipes haven't been in use for a period of time. One exception to this is if it only occurs with hot water in which case we can diagnose the water heater as being the source of the issue. You can learn more about replacing your water heater here.

6. Foul tasting/smelling water. This too may seem obvious, but if the water doesn't taste right, it likely means something indeed isn't right. If you don't trust your water enough to ingest it, we suggest you trust your instinct and give us a call immediately.
