Stoppages
Some of the most common plumbing issues to arise in a home are clogged sewers or drains.
One solution is snaking as it is a non-invasive way of helping maintain the life span of your pipes and general plumbing health. If snaking is not effective, then Hydro Jetting might be the more appropriate solution. Stoppages can be caused by anything from grease in the kitchen line, roots in the sewer, or throwing improper products down the drain/toilet. All pipes will eventually clog and snaking your line is an easy and cost effective way to solve your clogged plumbing.
All greases and fats harden when put down the drain. Whether it be grease from cooking or coconut oil used for your hair in the shower it all ends the same when it goes down that drain. While that bacon grease might be liquid when you're pouring it, it does not stay that way. This grease then accumulates and builds until it becomes a large solid mass that results in potentially serious drain blockage.
2. Hair
While we can't ask you to stop shedding your hair we can certainly warn you that inevitably eventually this hair that goes down the drain will accumulate and create blockage in the drainage system. We definitely recommend getting a drain screen to prevent the hair from making its way into your sewer system.
3. Coffee Grounds
Believe us, we know how important it is to start your day with a nice cup of joe. Let us warn you however that those grounds do not belong down your drain. As it turns out coffee grounds are one of the leading causes of blocked drains after grease! Avoid putting those grounds down the drain, for your sewers sake.
4. Leftover Food
Food making its way down your drain can be just as damaging as the other items on the list if they aren't put into the garbage disposal specifically. Even then however the garbage disposal isn't a guaranteed solution. There are certain fibrous and bony foods that still can wreak havoc on your plumbing.
5. Paper & Cotton Goods
Toilet paper is, of course, more than allowed to be flushed down your toilets. Those paper towels, cotton balls, feminine products, and napkins however do not belong down there. Even worse they expand as they come in contact with water leading to a compounding clogging issue. Cigarette butts are also something we often see accumulating and clogging up your sewer system, we definitely recommend avoiding this at all cost.
6. "Flushable" Wipes
The infamous flushable wipe. Advertised as being flushable simply does not make it so. I don't care how vehemently the manufacturer claims the wipes are flushable, as a plumber, I still find them clogging up sewer systems from the South Bay to the Mississippi River!
7. Root Systems
We don't expect you to be flushing seeds and saplings down your sewer system but root systems can indeed make their way into your pipes over time. Plants are naturally attracted to the mineral rich water in your sewer lines and eventually make their way into them.
We definitely recommend looking into Hydro Jetting to solve these and your other more serious clogging issues.
